A Spiritual awakening is a powerful, transformative experience that have captivated the minds and spirits of individuals seeking deeper self-understanding and spiritual growth since the beginning of time. Contrary to popular belief, these profound moments of realisation and energy alignment are not reserved for the founders of major world religions like Jesus and Buddha, mystics or gurus but can happen to anyone. Yes, believe it or not but most of us have this capacity to have this profound experience. In this blog, I will explore the concepts of awakening and chakra opening, shedding light on what they are, how they can occur in everyday life, and the potential they hold for personal transformation and an improved mental health.
What is Awakening?
Awakening is a profound shift in consciousness, a moment of realization that transcends the mundane and connects you to a deeper understanding of yourself and the universe. It often involves questioning your beliefs, values, and the very nature of existence and who you are. Here are some key aspects of awakening:
- Expanded Awareness: During an awakening, your perception expands beyond the limitations of the ego, allowing you to see the interconnectedness of all things.
- Self-Reflection: Awakening often involves intense self-reflection, as you see clearly your authentic self, your past choices, motivations, and the impact of your actions on others.
- Spiritual Growth: It is a journey of spiritual growth and personal development, leading to greater compassion, empathy, and a sense of purpose.
- Physical Impact: Experiencing an awakening is not just an internal neurological and psychological experience, it’s a physiological experience felt in the body, this may include feeling that your brain is lighting up, very much as illustrated in religious art in the form of a halo shining around the head of saints for example. These types of experience can last for days.
- Neurological evidence: Research has shown various brain regions involved in religious experiences, including the prefrontal cortex for cognitive aspects, the limbic system for emotional components, and the posterior superior parietal lobe for altered perceptions. For instance, one study by Kapogiannis et al. (2009) published in “Social Neuroscience” utilized fMRI to demonstrate that religious belief activates the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, suggesting its involvement in mediating religious experiences. There is a lot of current research going on in the field of neuroscience in how religious experiences impacts the brain. Lisa Miller’s research have shown that religious practices serves as a antidote to depression.
- Facilitation by trusted individuals: It could be very helpful to get some form of spiritual guidance when embarking on this path. Be mindful that spiritual leaders can have a profound effect on you, so before making yourself vulnerable in this regard, it is extremely important to make sure your guide is someone with high ethical standards with a proven reputation and integrity. Unfortunately, there are predatory individuals in this field who are more interested in exploiting your trust than serve you. Give yourself ample time to figure this out before making yourself vulnerable.
Awakening: How It Happens
- Profound Life Events: Awakening and chakra opening can be triggered by significant life events, such as trauma, loss, or moments of profound clarity after a longer period of feeling confused, lost and/or depressed.
- Meditation and Mindfulness: Regular meditation and mindfulness practices can gradually open and align chakras, leading to awakening.
- Yoga and Energy Work: Practices like yoga and energy healing can help remove blockages and stimulate the flow of energy within the chakras.
- BreathWork: Breathwork can play a role in facilitating the awakening process by promoting mindfulness, deep self-awareness, and altered states of consciousness.
- Spiritual Exploration: Delving into spirituality, exploring different belief systems, or having mystical experiences can initiate awakening and chakra activation.
- Self-Discovery: Self-reflection, personal growth, and a strong desire for a deeper understanding of oneself and the universe can also lead to awakening.
- Connection to the Natural World: Many people report experiencing profound spiritual awakenings in nature, as the natural world has a unique ability to inspire awe, wonder, and a sense of interconnectedness. Being in nature fosters a deep connection to the Earth and all living beings, evoking feelings of unity and oneness. The tranquility and beauty of nature provide a serene environment for quiet contemplation and reflection, leading to heightened awareness and a sense of the sacred. Nature’s simplicity and rhythm encourage mindfulness and presence, allowing individuals to ponder life’s deeper questions and gain insights into their existence. This calming environment also reduces stress, making individuals more open to spiritual experiences, which may include a sense of transcendence and a renewed perspective on what truly matters in life, such as inner growth and purpose. Going on longer walks in nature also provides bi-latera stimulation which have a powerful impact on the brain and reduces the intensity of and emotional memories. WHAT ARE SOME DIFFERENT PATHS TO REACH A SPIRITUAL AWAKENING?
Chakras and the Crown Chakra Opening:
Chakras are energy centers that are believed to exist within the subtle body, according to certain spiritual and philosophical traditions, particularly those originating in India. There are seven primary chakras located along the central channel, or spine, each associated with specific qualities, colors, and psychological aspects. The crown chakra, also known as Sahasrara in Sanskrit, is the seventh and highest chakra located at the top of the head.
The crown chakra is often associated with higher consciousness, spiritual connection, and enlightenment. When the crown chakra is said to open or become activated, it can lead to a profound spiritual awakening or a shift in one’s perception and consciousness. Here’s how this process is often understood:
- Connection to the Divine: The crown chakra is often associated with the connection to the divine, universal consciousness, or the higher self. When this chakra opens or becomes more active, individuals may feel a heightened sense of spiritual connection, a greater awareness of their place in the universe, and a sense of unity with all living beings.
- Expanded Consciousness: An opening of the crown chakra can lead to expanded consciousness and a broader perspective on life. Individuals may experience a deeper understanding of profound truths, a sense of inner peace, and a detachment from ego-driven concerns.
- Transcendence of Limitations: As the crown chakra awakens, individuals may transcend limiting beliefs and conditioned patterns of thinking. They may experience a sense of liberation from past traumas, fears, and attachments, leading to a more authentic and fulfilling life.
- Heightened Awareness: The opening of the crown chakra can lead to heightened awareness of the present moment and a deep sense of mindfulness. This heightened awareness can contribute to a sense of awe and wonder about the world.
- Spiritual Insights: Some people report receiving spiritual insights, revelations, or a sense of divine guidance when their crown chakra opens. These insights may help individuals navigate their life path with greater clarity and purpose.
Different belief systems and practices may have varying interpretations of chakras and their role in human experience. As a result, experiences related to chakras and awakenings can be highly subjective and personal. For individuals interested in exploring the opening of the crown chakra or other chakra-related experiences, it is essential to approach these practices with an open mind and seek guidance from experienced and trusted practitioners or spiritual teachers.
Practicing Meditation and Mindfulness:
The most well known awakening experience that most of us have heard about is probably that of Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama), who was born in 623 B.C., almost 2500 years ago in Nepal/India. He was using various Hindu/Yogi techniques such as mediation to reach his awakening. However, it wasn’t until he had a profound insight while meditating that he finally achieved his awakening. His profound insight was that humans suffer because we refuse to accept painful realities and stay attached and hold on to how we want our reality to be. This of course doesn’t mean we can’t improve a bad situation but it means that letting go of our attachments and face reality as it is, of any given situation will set us free from our mental anguish. Practicing Mindfulness and Mediation on a regular basis can lead to a profound Awakening experience. It’s highly recommended that when taking this path you have some form of experienced and trusted guide.
Practicing Koans:
Koans are a unique teaching tool used in Zen Buddhism to challenge and transcend the rational mind’s limitations. Other forms of Buddism use similar techniques as well. They are typically presented as brief, nonsensical stories, questions, or statements that defy logical resolution. Examples of famous koans include “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” or “What was your original face before your parents were born?” Koans are tools designed to shift meditators beyond ordinary conceptual understanding and lead them to direct, experiential insights. They challenge the conditioned mind, disrupt ego-centered thinking, and can serve as a transformative path toward awakening and a deeper understanding of one’s true nature. However, it’s important to note that koans are typically explored under the guidance of an experienced Zen teacher, as they require skillful instruction and support to navigate effectively.
Spending time in Nature:
Going on long awe inspiring mindfulness walk in nature where you are able to stay present in your body using your senses, free from rumination and intrusive thoughts, can stimulate an awakening experience. Walking in of itself provides bi-lateral stimulation and is stress reducing and helps with the neurological process of finding clarity and reducing emotional trauma. It’s extremely beneficial for your mental and spiritual health overall.
Attending Religious Services and Prayer:
Participating in spiritual services and engaging in prayer can be meaningful and spiritually enriching practices for many individuals, and they can contribute to personal growth and a sense of connection to the divine or the sacred. When a spiritual service offers a supportive fellowship, an inspirational spiritual leader along with awe inspiring choir music/chanting, art and architecture it can inspire strong emotions that triggers the spiritual center of the brain. Whether they lead to a full-blown “awakening” depends on many different factors as mentioned above, but it is absolutely possible.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy, while primarily focused on addressing psychological and emotional issues, can sometimes contribute to a person’s spiritual or existential awakening. The term “awakening” in this context typically refers to a profound shift in one’s perception, understanding, or consciousness about themselves, their life, or their place in the world. Here are a few ways in which psychotherapy might potentially lead to such an awakening:
- Self-awareness: Psychotherapy often encourages deep self-reflection and exploration of one’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This process of self-discovery can lead individuals to gain a more profound understanding of themselves, their motivations, and their past experiences, which may trigger a sense of awakening or transformation.
- Resolving unresolved issues: Addressing unresolved traumas, conflicts, or emotional wounds in therapy can lead to healing and personal growth. This process can facilitate a shift in one’s perspective and an increased sense of wholeness and well-being, akin to an awakening.
- Enhanced coping skills: Psychotherapy equips individuals with valuable coping strategies and emotional regulation techniques. As individuals learn to manage their emotions and stress more effectively, they may experience increased resilience and a greater sense of control over their lives, contributing to a sense of empowerment and awakening.
- Increased mindfulness and presence: Some forms of psychotherapy, such as mindfulness-based therapies (e.g., Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy), emphasize present-moment awareness and mindfulness practices. These techniques can help individuals become more attuned to the present and experience a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them.
- Reevaluation of beliefs and values: In the course of psychotherapy, individuals may reevaluate their beliefs, values, and life goals. This reexamination can lead to shifts in one’s perspective, priorities, and a sense of awakening as they align more closely with their authentic selves.
- Acceptance: When individuals accept the reality of their circumstances and themselves, they are more likely to experience a sense of inner peace, contentment, and overall well-being, even in the face of life’s challenges.
It’s important to note that not everyone who undergoes psychotherapy will necessarily experience a spiritual or existential awakening. The outcomes of therapy vary widely depending on the individual’s unique circumstances, therapist-client rapport, therapeutic approach, and the goals set for therapy. Additionally, if someone is specifically seeking a spiritual awakening, they may explore complementary practices like meditation, mindfulness, or religious/spiritual guidance in conjunction with psychotherapy to facilitate this process.
Luckily for all of us and regardless of external factors, Awakening Experiences are not reserved for a select few; they are accessible to anyone who embark on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth. These experiences can bring profound shifts in consciousness, helping you connect with your inner wisdom, cultivate compassion, and find purpose in life. Whether triggered by life events, connecting with nature, religious practice, meditation, or spiritual exploration, embracing the potential for awakening and chakra activation can be a transformative path toward a more enlightened and fulfilling existence.
In April of 2011, I had my own Awakening Experience, which not only was a very profound life and mind shifting experience, it also set me on a new path in life and inspired me to becoming the person I am today, including a practicing Buddist, Mindfulness and Meditation Teacher and a Licensed Psychotherapist.
